I have a tub/shower unit and the knob I pull to use the shower on the tub faucet is stuck. How to help?

It used to work and was difficult to pull and push back it. Now, it’s stuck and I’m afraid I’ll break something if I pull any harder. I imagine I could replace the faucet, but was hoping for a fix. Thanks
