Help with toilet repair.?

The gray thing that brings in water started to spray water all over the place, then the tank won’t fill up with water. What can I do? I can’t afford a plumber.

Our toilet had been running non-stop, so I bought a repair kit to replace every moving part in the tank. Now it no longer runs, but it has a very slow drip where the water supply enters the tank. What did I do wrong? If I try to tighten the plastic screw, it leaks more!
